Planting
Choose consistently moist soil rich in organic matter, in sun or partial shade. It tolerates wet sites and heavy clay; some shade is helpful during hot summers.
Care
Prune in early spring to encourage fresh, brightly coloured stems. If underground shoots spread beyond the intended space, use a spade to root-prune the edge of the colony.
Before planting: Allow space for a colony; its vigorous spreading habit can be awkward in a tightly planted border.
