Practical guide

What should a patio quote include?

Make patio proposals comparable by recording ground preparation, materials, drainage, access and waste responsibilities.

Describe the same area and outcome

Give each installer the same sketch and approximate measurements. Show the current surface, door thresholds, steps and any places where water collects. Ask which measurements and existing conditions need a site visit before a fixed scope is possible.

Name the intended use and desired material, but leave the installation specification to the relevant professional. A quantity estimate alone does not establish the right foundation, levels or drainage solution.

Ask what happens below the paving

Ask the installer to describe removal of the current surface, excavation, disposal, the base and bedding system, edge support and jointing. Marshalls’ concrete paving guidance distinguishes preparation layers and finishing, but the correct design depends on the paving product and your site.

Compare written inclusions rather than simply the paving price per square metre. If one proposal excludes groundwork or disposal, record that difference before comparing totals. Ask what happens if unsuitable ground is discovered and how a change will be priced and agreed.

Assign access, delivery and waste

State where materials can be delivered and how they will reach the work area. Marshalls describes kerbside or clear-driveway delivery conditions; that does not mean the installer or supplier will carry the material into the rear garden.

Ask who books deliveries, protects the route, handles excavated waste and reinstates affected areas. Confirm whether the quoted price assumes mechanical access or manual movement. If the assumption is wrong, the two proposals may cover different work.

Agree completion and continuing care

Request the planned finish, inspection or handover, product information and care instructions. Record the warranty provider and conditions in writing rather than treating a logo or a finished photograph as a warranty.

Garden designers can help where the question is layout, use and materials across the whole garden. Ask who owns the design and drainage assessment before hiring separate businesses. Use the Belfast discovery page to compare declared patio services and then confirm the specific job directly.
